I just wanted to clarify a little about inversion, since it is kind of a pet peeve to hear people talking about it like it is an avoidable issue(which it is not)

Inversion or more correctly thermal inversion is when a warm front moves above a cold front creating a high pressure zone, this only happens for long periods of times in valleys where the surrounding mountains can keep the usually faster cold front from moving on. The warm air above the cold air keeps the air from circulating so pollutants, including dust, collect rather than being dispersed.

As for this being a "modern" problem that is not a good term for it since this has always been a problem. A fairly common example in earths past was with invading armies. The armies were usually of less than 10000 soldiers yet still they moved in a perpetual "haze", yes another word for inversion, from the cooking fires and the dust kicked up by the soldiers, there animals and supply wagons. So our "modern" problem is really quite old and from what we have read in 1491 I wouldn't be surprised if the salt lake valley was home to much inversion, prior to the arrival of the pioneer settlers.

Not to be attacking anyone I just want us to keep our facts straight inversion is not a direct result of us but rather a temporary cease in the cycle that keeps the air clean. While not preventable we can reduce our emmisions so that during the "natural inversions" it is not so unpleasant.
