Oppression, in Africa, no less.

Oppression and Coups: Not just for Central America anymore!

At the FARC talk a couple of us went to, the speaker focused mostly on facebook, Twitter, and Egypt. People can only take so much oppression, and with all the technology available to protestors right now, it is much harder to conceal.

Communism in Central America

Since we have been talking a lot about communism in Central America lately, I decided to research a bit about it. I of course went straight to Google and typed in just that, "Communism in Central America." This was the first site that popped up. It is extremely interesting not only because it gives a history of communism in a few different countries, but also because the person who created the page was an adult during the time of Reagan and has a personal opinion about the whole situation. I thought it was interesting to see how an American viewed everything. Here's the address:

USS Arkansas

A picture post card taken April 1914 of the USS Arkansas was published in February 17, 2011 Arkansas Democrat Gazette. The caption read, "With tensions mounting between the United States and Mexico, President Woodrow Wilson ordered the U.S. Navy to prevent the landing of a shipment of guns at Veracruz. The state's namesake battleship took part in the landings at the Mexican port city. Sailors participated in the bloody street fighting that eventually secured the city. Two of its crew members died of wounds received in the assault. The Arkansas remained in Mexican waters for the duration of the summer, returning to the United States in October. Note the life preserver with the battleship's name on it."

The guns were coming from Germany who was emerging as a threat to the U. S. England and France prior to WWI. Germany intended to establish an alliance with victorious Mexican revolutionaries and to build a canal in Nicaragua. The U.S. had intervened in Nicaragua earlier in the century to prevent Germany from contracting with the Nicaraguan government to build a canal. If the guns had reached the revolutionaries or the Germans had built a Nicaraguan canal they would have established a foothold in the Americas. A foothold that would have been very advantageous to the Germans and Japanese in WWII. No doubt, there would have been considerable fighting in Central America for control of the region.

"Journey to The Border"

The Washington Post has a lot of current information on various issues in Central America. I watched this slideshow and found it very informative and extremely gripping. I also thought of the movie "Sin Nombre." The slideshow and movie are a lot alike, probably because they are so "dead on" with their information about Central Americans journeying to "The Border."

Here is the link to the slideshow. I am encouraging everyone to take time to watch it, since this is a subject that almost everyone has an opinion about- even people who know nothing about Central America.

Politica Extranjera

Pancho Villa in Little Rock / Mexico

There is an exhibit about Arkansas involvement in the search for Pancho Villa in Mexico at the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History. It'll be going through the end of May!

Mexico isn't really part of Central America, but it seems it had an important cultural influence and served as a major refuge for intellectuals from CA and elsewhere during the early twentieth century. We've read about Sandino and Clementina Suarez spending time there.

I am very impressed with the people we've learned about so far!

Historical Sources on Central America

I thought I posted this last week, but it didn't post for some reason...

Some of you have asked about general histories of Central America.  I recommend the following:

Lynn Foster's _A Brief History of Central America_:  http://www.amazon.com/Brief-History-Central-America-Checkmark/dp/0816073325/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1296693643&sr=8-7

John Boothe's _Understanding Central America_:  http://www.amazon.com/Understanding-Central-America-Global-Rebellion/dp/0813344212/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1296693733&sr=8-1

If you do a search on Amazon for "Central America History" or "Central American History," some other titles come up.  I have not read these, but you might look at readers' reviews.

Ana Patricia Rodriguez's _Dividing the Isthmus_ is a good literary history of the region:  http://www.amazon.com/Dividing-Isthmus-Transnational-Literatures-ebook/dp/B003QHYKFU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1296693643&sr=8-2

On the revolutions of the 70s and 80s, Walter Lefeber's _Inevitable Revolutions_ has been recommended to me:  http://www.amazon.com/Inevitable-Revolutions-United-Central-America/dp/0393309649/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1296693964&sr=8-1
