Oppression and Coups: Not just for Central America anymore!

At the FARC talk a couple of us went to, the speaker focused mostly on facebook, Twitter, and Egypt. People can only take so much oppression, and with all the technology available to protestors right now, it is much harder to conceal.

This makes me think of the recently tried rebellion in China called the "Jasmine Revolt". The Chinese authorities went so far as to block people from facebook and twitter so that they couldn't spread the word about the revolt!

It might be somewhat premature to make such a connection but the current unrest in the middle east whose central theme seems to be a desire for freerer societies in the region, can be attributed to Operation Iraqi Freedom. Iraq's progress toward a more democratic society has been evident for a couple of years. In my opinion, the leaders of these movements in sourounding nations have been taking note of Iraq's progress and are now taking action to bring reforms to their own countries.

Interesting to both of you. They blocked Facebook in Egypt as well, and were using people's Twitter psts to track them down.
