GMOs and the Banana Industry

Should the banana industry look at genetically modified options (GMO=genetically modified organism) to save bananas from the plague of fungus, Tropical Race Four?  Author Tom Philpott says 'no.'

I'm not really sure how I stand on the GMO's. Have they found a lead on the cause for the fungus? I think that would be the first step. What this article does show, however, is that the issue of the fungus has created a reason to look at how the banana farmers are being treated. This is a great thing. Maybe the problem that should be fixed first is the rights of the banana farmers. Then we can worry about the fungus.
